Weapons typical of 17th century

After the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, Governor Antonio de Otermín led a force in an attempt to reconquer New Mexico during the winter of 1681-1682. His forces returned to El Paso del Rio del Norte without accomplishing their objective, and he turned to the task of establishing a more permanent settlement for the exile colony. The arrival of 385 new Isleta pueblo refugees added to the difficulty of seeing to the needs of the displaced Spanish colonists. Another concern was the Manso natives that inhabited the area as well as the nearby Sumas, as these tribes and others across northern New Spain had become emboldened by the achievement of the pueblo rebels. The nomadic Apaches of southern New Mexico, always a menace to Spanish settlements, also escalated their attacks on the expanding populace around the mission church of Guadalupe del Paso.

The presidio was barely functioning with a paltry force under the command of Sebastián de Herrera. The supplies that had earlier been secured and distributed by Father Ayeta had run out, leading many of the soldiers to ask for license to leave the colony to search for food and other means to sustain themselves and their families. Many of these had still not returned after their licenses had expired.

Frustrated by the depleted garrison, which left the settlers exposed to attack, on September 22, 1682, Otermín called for another review of the supplies and troops. His aim was to document the availability of military supplies left over from the failed reconquest campaign, the names of the fugitives that had gone to El Parral, Sonora and Casas Grandes, and the veracity of rumors that the colonists had sold weapons and munitions to the natives of El Paso. He also discovered that many colonists had sold or gambled away their hoes, plowshares and axes they had received the prior year, squandering His Majesty’s generosity. A secondary objective of the muster list was to determine whether it would be possible to assemble a force to launch a counterattack against the Apache raiders.

The final list counted 148 men able to bear arms in the exile colony. It appears that Juan de Archuleta was on the muster twice (so there are 149 entries). The table below presents them in alphabetical order by last name (some with alternate spellings as applicable) and includes the location where they passed muster, their military title and a description of their equipment. Search to see if any of your ancestors were on the list!

This blog post presents the men who Otermín designated as fugitives, were absent from the colony or were deceased. Subscribe to the blog to receive email updates.

Note: The muster list and accompanying documents were transcribed by Barbara De Marco and Jerry R. Craddock at the Cibola Project. I translated the entries into English and created the table below.
